While the main function of a school is to ensure that students reach their academic potential and leave school with a range of qualifications, we also have a responsibility towards their personal development.  At The Sydney Russell School, students are offered a wide range of activities and experiences.  Some will take place in lesson time, to support and enhance the curriculum, others after school.  Some will be one off activities, others will be an ongoing programme.  All members of staff are encouraged to plan and deliver a range of extra curricular activities.  Miss Haslett is the Enrichment Coordinator; her role is to widen the range of enrichment activities available to students and to increase the number of students participating regularly in Extra Curricular Activities.  The activities forming the programme are likely to vary from year to year. House Cup All students and staff are divided into five houses and there will be a series of competitions, with the House Cup awarded to the winning House at the end of the academic year. Sports  Extra-Curricular Activities Although our number one priority is maximising examination success, school is not just about academic study. At Sydney Russell we actively encourage all students to enjoy school and to get involved in as wide a range of activities as possible. School Trips and Residential Visits There are regular trips to museums, theatres, art galleries and concert halls. We also have a long tradition of residential journeys and outdoor pursuits, such as trips to Trewern Outdoor Centre on the Welsh borders, Danbury Camp in Essex, a watersports centre in the South of France and a ski resort in Austria. Clubs A wide range of clubs and activities are on offer at lunch-time or after school, reflecting the interests and enthusiasm of the staff who run them. Current clubs include Chess, Science, Humanities, Maths, Computers and Languages. Sports The school has a very active and successful team of P.E. staff, who organise clubs and teams across a wide range of sporting activities. These currently include football, cricket, netball, rugby, basketball, and athletics. Music, Dance and Drama The school takes pride in the quality of its performing arts. Students can receive individual tuition in a range of instruments as well as joining groups such as the choir, orchestra and steel band. Dance and Drama are well-established, with popular after-school clubs as well as GCSE courses. Students have the chance to take part in public performances.  In the Autumn Term, there is a Jazz Festival; a Christmas Concert and two performances of the school musical which in 2017 is Guys and Dolls.  In the Spring Term there is a Festival of Classical Music, including the Young Musician of the Year competition and a piano recital.  In the Summer, the musical programme is completed by the popular Battle of the Bands Contest.
